"MAKE THEM PAY YOU WHAT THEY WOULD PAY A WHITE MAN": intersectional feminist analysis of the book The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

In this diploma thesis I analyze the book The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo from intersectional feminist point of view. The author of this book is Taylor Jenkins Reid, 1st edition came out in 2017 and became popular thanks to not only social media. In the first part of my thesis I focus on overview of theory and methodology, which I work with later, such as intersectionality, gender, race, sexuality. In this context I am interested in theorizing the concepts of male gaze, female gaze and toxic and healthy masculinity. I also focus on literature and feminism and the portrayal of femininity in literature. In the analytical part of my diploma thesis, I analyze characters chronologically using the original structure of the book. My interest in analysis is in the construction of gender, race and sexuality. I focus on how the author constructs sexual and gender identity in concrete historical as well as social context and how are relationships of the main heroine constructed in this context. Gender Analysis of Christian Magazine IN! - dívčí svět

The thesis presents a qualitative gender analysis of a Christian girls' magazine "IN! - dívčí svět" and explores how femininity is constructed in the magazine and how the results of the analysis can be interpreted using feminist theology. An important starting point of the thesis is the belief in the existence of asymmetric power relations. The study of the literary-media text, thus, allows showing whether the power relations are strengthened or subverted through it. The main analytical category of this thesis is gender. In the theoretical-methodological part, the basic concepts and methods used during the analysis are presented. In the analytical part, the method of resistant reading and critical discourse analysis is used. The analytical part consists of fifteen selected texts. Finally, the collected data are summarised.

Gender-sensitive Literary Analysis of Richard Yates's novel The Revolutionary Road

In the thesis "Gender Literary Analysis of the novel Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates" a qualitative interpretative analysis with aspects of discourse analysis is used to interpret the plot and characters from a gender perspective. These interpretations are based on the "resistant reading" method introduced by Judith Fetterley. The literary analysis concepts introduced by Pam Morris and Elaine Showalter are also used as a point of reference. The aim for the application of Gender as a methodological category is to reveal and find new potential meanings and interpretations of the whole story and its characters with respect to their gender identity. The key areas that are focused on are motherhood, emancipation.

Gender literary analysis of novel Němci by Czech author Jakuba Katalpa focusing on the concepts motherhood and parenthood

In the diploma thesis Gender Literary Analysis of the novel Němci by Jakuba Katalpa focusing on the motherhood and the parenthood is a gender literary analysis of the novel Němci by the Czech writer Jakuba Katalpa. The thesis focuses on the motherhood, fatherhood, respectively parenthood and how are these phenomenon established within the concrete society: as essentialist, that means biologically, versus the constructivist, therefore socially constructed paradigm. In my thesis I use qualitative interpretative analysis with aspects of discourse analysis and feminist literary theory. Using gender as a analytical cathegory as a methodological category, I try to find and uncover new interpretations and meanings of the book Němci and try to find alternative interpretations of plot and characters. Methodological-theoretical part on the basis of literature introduces the basic terms in use (gender, patriarchy, literary canon, feminism, feminist literary theory), with the help of several writers and authors (Terry Eagleton, Pam Morris, Elaine Showalter). The next part of the thesis pays attention to the concepts of motherhood (Zuzana Kiczková, Sara Ruddick, Elisabeth Badinter, Hana Hašková) and fatherhood (R. W. The roles of women and men in selected old norse sagas

The roles of women and men in selected Old Norse sagas diploma thesis focuses on literary analysis of two Old Norse sagas - the Volsunga Saga and the Laxdœla saga - from the perspective of gender theory. Each of the sagas belongs to a different genre, The Volsunga is a so-called fornaldarsögur, while The Laxdœla saga would be considered a Íslendingasögur. The theoretical part of the thesis draws from the methods of feminist literary critique of the 1970s and 1980s, namely theory of resistant reading which helps readers avoid adopting the author's own perception of their work, and feminist archetypal analysis. The second part of the thesis - the analysis itself - is divided into three topics: agency, vengefulness, and genealogy; they are common for both sagas and allow for deeper exploration of the texts. It is on the basis on these topics that the thesis answers originally posited hypotheses regarding behaviours and behavioural patterns, activities, and meanings associated with female and male characters. The Concept of Violence in Kobold, a Novel by Radka Denemarková

The master's thesis The Concept of Violence in Kobold, a Novel by Radka Denemarková inquires into a representation of violence in the selected literary text, written by a Czech author, from the perspective of gender analysis. Integral part of the master's thesis is the writing style "feminine writing", in which the double-novel Kobold is written. The analysis is carried out in the context of feminist literary theories. The work is therefore based on the concept of resistant reading, which is inseparably associated with the name of Judith Fetterley, and which allows us to examine the text without being influenced by the author's concept. Other inseparable pillars of this master's thesis are the works of literary theorists Pam Morris, Elain Showalter, Jan Matonoha and Hélène Cixous. The Analysis of Gender Relations and the Concept of Romantic Love in the Novel of Milan Kundera The Unbearable Lightness of Being

The diploma thesis discusses gender relationships, construction of romantic love, and questions of infidelity in the novel Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera. These concepts are examined by means of feminist literary theories that deal with gender as an analytic category and that draw on resistant reading and reader response criticism as major theoretical and methodological points of analysis. The first analytical part focuses on the ways in which femininity and masculinity of the main characters are constructed within the context of patriarchal society under socialism. The second part of the analysis is devoted to various forms of love that appear among the characters. It investigates the role of these love schemes within the presented relationships and focuses on motives of infidelity while considering the gender identity of the characters. By employing gender analysis, this diploma thesis offers a new perspective that reflects on the reproduction of gender stereotypes and departs from existing interpretations of Kundera's major novel.

The Concepts of Motherhood and Fatherhood in Selected Novels by Petra Soukupová

Thesis The Concepts of Motherhood and Fatherhood in Selected Novels of Petra Soukupová will be through the tools of feminist literary theory analyze three contemporary novels of the Czech authoress- Pod sněhem (2015), K moři (2007) and Zmizet (2011). The basic analytical category will be gender, but equally important will be the concepts of motherhood and fatherhood, which interweave all three novels. An integral part of the thesis will be the method of resistant reading, which is based on the theory by Judith Fetterley. Resistant reading is an alternative to uninstructed or unreflected reading, in which a reader uncritically accept the author's concept of the text. The core of the resistant reading is, therefore, a critical examination of literary works and the formation of new critical meanings to androcentrism. Important building stones of the thesis will be the work of literary theorist Pam Morris and work of the literary theorist Jonathan Cullera. Images of femininity and masculinity in Ještěd Novels of Karolína Světlá

The subject of this thesis (Images of femininity and masculinity in Ještěd novels by Karolína Světlá) is a gender analysis of selected prose of Karolína Světlá, focused specifically on the works such as Vesnický román, Kříž u potoka, Frantina, Kantůrčice and Nemodlenec. The theoretical part presents basic principles, approaches and methods of the feminist literary theory including concepts focused on analyses of power and domination out of which I mostly use the work by Pierre Bourdieu. The theoretical part also contains positioning the writer's work within the literary-historical context and introducing source texts. The core of the thesis is a gender analysis based on my interpretation of texts and the method of resistant reading that concentrates on specific gender aspects in the entire series of works - the subject of my interest is creating masculinity and femininity (including gender attributes and roles or myths and archetypes), narration of the story from a gender perspective, forms of motherhood and fatherhood, topics of power, violence and sexuality. Attention is also paid to the motives of a victim or romantic love.
